Cornell University study finds that CBD oil helps dogs with arthritis
The study done in late 2018 has shown that CBD helps improve osteoarthritis (wear and tear of the joint) pain in dogs! See the picture below to get the basic idea. This is great news because it means that dog owners do not have to use medications with lots of side effects just to make their pet more comfortable.
Osteoarthritis is a condition involving the joints that happens with age in both animals and humans. It is much similar to a tyre going thin with lots of driving. We can replace tyres easily but unfortunately we cannot replace joints (well we technically can, but it is quite invasive and best if it can be avoided or delayed). This is because the joint surface is covered in cartilage: a thick, slippery, sturdy yet somewhat forgiving substance that covers the joint. Once this cartilage starts to run low, pain can start. Sometimes, the cartilage even degrades to the point where a joint is bone on bone, ouch!
So how does CBD oil do this? Well, every person and animal has a unique body system, called the endocannabinoid system. This system involves many organs in the body: from the brain, skin, heart and lungs. There are 2 different types of receptors in the body, called CB1 and CB2 receptors. As a matter of fact, your pets body makes it own chemicals that interact with these receptors. CBD oil is special in that it can interact with this endocannabinoid system naturally and stimulate it. Doing this has many potential benefits, including anti-inflammatory, anti-pain and anti-anxiety effects. It is special in that you are not using synthetic drugs on your dog, you are simply using what nature has given us to use naturally. There is nothing better than natural healing through food as medicine and those that support such ideas.
